Tees Part Four

In contrast to Lorne and Dick, Kelly Blake Moran wrote the following:

"I agree, the ability to shape a shot from the tee should be based more upon the player's creativity and skill in adjusting grip, stance, swing plane, etc in order to shape the shot, rather than prowling the tee looking for that one spot in the tee where the architect deemed he/she can use to shape their shot. It is another case of dumbing down design in my view."

I underestimated the subject matter entirely - this has been a great discussion.

Ian, I'll do an experiment this weekend when I play the 53-year old back nine at the military course I frequent. It has undulating tees (tho more from poor construction and neglect than design).

Instead of looking for a level spot, I'll try the slopes. Maybe it'll work...

Having just played Chambers Bay last week, i can report that the uneven tees is overstated. the tee boxes are relatively flat with very little grade differences. The small amount I did see did set me up to shape the shot...useful on par 3's.

the slight uneveness just added to the character of the course and made it feel more mature than the 6 months "new" that it is.
